Master Bedroom Reno

I wanted to share some of our progress on our master bedroom! I have been talking about our renovations on it so much on here but really there just hasn't been much to show you guys! However, we are finally reaching the final stages and I am getting so excited! 

So just to explain the room that is going to be our master bedroom is the old upstairs guest room seen below.

We knew when we bought the house that we wanted to make this room into our master bedroom. However, the heat and electricity to this part of the house were no longer working properly and the room needed to be fully gutted for those things to be fixed. We knew it would be an expensive and time consuming job and we were only going to do it once so we wanted to do it right when we finally did it. Right after we first moved in I removed the paneling in this room and fixed the plaster walls underneath. I tried to make it as pretty as possible and this room functioned fine as a summer guest room and as a make shift studio for me but this past summer we finally had the money and time to start making into our dream master bedroom.


The to do list would include after completely gutting the room.... putting in new windows, insulating, restoring the floor, running new wiring, adding duct work for heating, putting up drywall and then bead board on the walls and a ship lap ceiling.

I have to say I usually absolutely love demo work but taking down this ceiling was awful! Our farm was originally a sheep farm and we think they used the wool from the sheep as the insulation in the ceiling! The wool combined with 100 plus years of mouse droppings made it such a messy itchy process! It took us forever to get it all cleaned up and out of the house this being an upstairs room and all...boy am I glad that it is done and over with.

As we started taking down the plaster and lath on the walls it was so cool to see the original framing  ...we could also see that there was absolutely no insulation in the walls.  We also took the plaster off of the pot belly stove chimney exposing the beautiful old brick.

I always feel like being done with the demo work and having that all cleaned up is a major turning point in our renovations.  At least then the kids can be in the area we are working on with us. We try to teach them as much as possible and they really love helping.

Once we saw how beautiful the original support beams in the ceiling were we knew we would keep them exposed. We scrubbed them and then stained them Minwax's Dark Walnut. We decided to keep the ceiling vaulted and put up ship lap running it all the way up to the peak. The picture below shows where we are now in the whole process...I have to finish painting and Neal has to finish putting up the ship lap boards that run along where the wall meets the ceiling. The ceiling will need a couple more coats of paint and then it will be done!

This has definitely been one of our longer projects as we started it late in the summer and now are really only able to work on it in the evenings and on the weekends.

I will be keeping to my favorite and timeless "whites and creams mixed with dark woods and metals palette" in this room. We have some new to us antique pieces of furniture and some great hand-me-downs that we are super excited about that will go into the bedroom once it is finished. Being at the antique mall where I have a booth all of the time enabled me to slowly find the perfect pieces of furniture for the room. We are definitely in the home stretch now and I can't wait to start putting it all together!

Little Peek At The Guest Room

So here is a little sneak peek at the changes I have made to the guest room! I have a little more to finish up in here but I thought I would share the part that I have done for now! I only ever have the time to work on this room here and there so it's been a long process but it is all finally coming together and I couldn't wait to share!

The old iron bed is a Craig's List find...I obsessively checked every day until I found one...this one happened to be just up the road at a horse farm. I had been looking for just the right piece to hang above the bed and I found a big piece of old molding at the flea market and painted it white. It fits perfectly above the bed.

I bought the night stand at the Springfield Antique Show Extravaganza. The vendor across from me there has two giant lots of antique furniture, I mean it is worth going to this show just to go to his booth. Needless to say my sisters and I buy a lot from him because all of these awesome pieces are just sitting there staring at us the whole time. Well the one morning I went in John (the vendor) had a whole stack of chippy white furniture gathered together for me because he knows that's what I love. And I mean how could I resist...wait till you see the mantle I bought from him and the chippy white screen door!! The thing is he has so much awesome furniture that I didn't even know this little night stand was over there! To say I love it is an understatement and it is just perfect next to the bed.

I also bought the drawer pull on the nightstand at Springfield. One of the vendors sells only cast iron hardware (at way cheaper prices than on Etsy) so I came home with a bag full. I have a garage full of furniture to fix up and paint for the Fall Springfield Extravaganza and I will need lots of cute hardware for it all!

The rug and ironstone pitchers are all flea market finds.

The throw pillows in the middle of the bed are both thrift store finds, along with the curtains in the windows. The quilted shams are from Walmart and the pillow cases are vintage.

Bedroom Dresser

This is our bedroom dresser and I have always struggled with what to place above it because it is so long. I found the mirror at the thrift store for $5 a couple of years ago and painted it a light gray color but I could never find anything I liked for the empty wall space next to it.

And then I spotted this little white $5 cupboard at the thrift store the other day. For that price I figured it was worth bringing home and trying, besides the glass knob on it is worth $5 alone. Turns out it works perfectly in the space and the bonus is it provides storage too. It was built to be a medicine cabinet so it has lots of little shelves which I can put my creams and perfume on.

I bought the little tote at the MauMee Antique Mall for $6 and painted it gray, it is great for holding my makeup and my watches. Now I know you are wondering about that amazing enamelware pitcher....

I know I don't need to tell you how thrifty I am but every once in a while you stumble across something that you just know you aren't going to find at your local flea market or thrift store. Well this beautiful French enamelware pitcher is one of those things. I found it at Mademoiselle Tresors on Etsy, Wahine has the most amazing things in her shop. I had been looking for an enamel pitcher and I love anything that is white with blue stripes so I knew this was the one for me.

The Blue Willow sugar dish was a gift from my Dad and it is one of my favorite things. And Neal built me the rustic box (painted Glidden "Whispering Wheat") so that I would have place for my chargers. I am so happy with the way it all came together, some things are worth the wait.
