January Whites

We took our Christmas tree down this week and I am thinking that I will keep the furniture the way it is arranged, for now:)  And I know I say the same thing every January but after the clutter that Christmas creates I am always ready to get back to a mostly white palette and simplify things.

I know you guys are probably tired of seeing this same room time and time again, but honestly this is the only area of the house that is presentable right now. We have one whole end of the dining room taken down to the studs and we were going to rebuild it but honestly taking down the plaster and lath is so messy that I am beginning to think that we should just gut the whole room at once. But that requires me being patient, (which I'm not so good at) because we don' t have the time or the money to do it right now. And I bought the most beautiful cupboard (needs a major makeover) to go in the dining room and I can't wait to paint it and put pretty things in it but I don't want anything in that room right now if we are gutting it. And in the meantime the cupboard is just calling my name longing to be pretty again. I also want to repaint the living room so I haven't been wanting to photograph it until I get to that. And on top of it we are going to have our chimney put in the family room sometime in the next couple of months...which I am head over heels excited about but that too will create havoc:/ It will all be great in the end but bear with me in the meantime!

And I wanted to take a second to thank my assistant who is always right there next to me while I take my pictures....

she is the best helper, she is especially good at throwing pillows on the floor:)

  11. Hello from Missouri! I recently discovered your blog and feel like I stumbled on a treasure!! I spent the last few days recovering from a nasty strep virus that had me down and out, so I was able to (DEVOUR!) read through all your archives. It was fun to read backwards and see how much amazing progress you've made on your lovely house. I would LOVE to see more of the demo/reno photos as you go ahead with your next projects; it makes the "pretty" After pics all the more meaningful. You're awesome!!

  13. I love your floors (and the rest of the home, too)! How are they finished? We have an old farmhouse and we have the original pine floors almost ready to finish. Out with the nasty 70s carpet and 4 layers of linoleum and vinyl! Yea! But now I have to decide how to 'finish' the pine floors. What did you do? Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Michele! We have used various methods to sand the floors in our home, but I always do the staining and poly by hand myself. In this room we actually used a planer on the floor boards (you can see the whole process in my post "Family Room Part Two") and then I refinished them with Minwaxs Dark Walnut. In our kitchen I scraped the glue left from the linoleum by hand and then sanded them with a hand held sander and then stained them the Dark Walnut. In our dining room we rented a giant floor sander from the Home Depot and then I stained them by hand. Let me know if you have any more questions and good luck!

  14. Really don't mind seeing your home over and over again. It's always worth a look!
We waited on the bathroom, and it was well worth the wait. Last night I couldn't sleep so I did a search on Pinterest for Farmhouse 5540 and looked at your home over and over again!
